From Global Institute of Ambiguous Instruments database:
Function:

Through the exposure to UV light over an extended time this instrument detects residue on the selected object, be it fabric, paper, personal affects (i.e. jewelry, watch, cufflink etc.) Through a slow and complex analysis of the residue, the Recollectometer compiles a history of the object and its human interaction, identifying and decoding specific moments in time.

This instrument is the result of a collaboration between the Theoretical History and Material Physics departments at the Institute of Curiosity and Investigation. The two departments have secured funding to support a long-term study into object-memory and continue to work together to compile an archive of lost histories.
